In vitro antileishmanial evaluation of Vernonia Brachycalyx leaf latex extract against two leishmania species

: Leishmaniasis is a major public health problem, and the alarming spread of parasite resistance has increased importance discovering new therapeutic products. In present study, antileishmanial activity methanolic extract leaf latex obtained from Ethiopian plant Vernonia brachycalyx O. H. (family Asteraceae) was evaluated by in vitro testing against Leishmania aethiopica . Antileishmanial test carried out using Alamar Blue assay on promastigotes axenic cultured amastigotes clinical isolates, cell viability fluorometrically determined. Amphotericin B used as positive control, 1% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) media were employed negative control. Moreover, preliminary phytochemical analysis extracts performed. Results study indicated that possesses good both parasites, with IC values of6.82 ± 0.18 6.34 0.20μg/ml 3.53 0.33 2.61 0.907μg/ml axenically , respectively. The demonstrated selectivity indices (SIs) 15.27 16.42 29.50 39.90 cultivated While, amphotericin SIs 7.91 8.23 7.45 7.73 Phytochemical screening contains flavonoids, tannins, cardiac glycosides, terpenoids, saponins, alkaloids, steroids. findings this investigation attest V. promising warranting further investigations into active constituents.
